No decision made on the future of a Guthrie police officer

Bookmark and Share

A review panel appears to have made a recommendation of termination for a lieutenant with the Guthrie Police Department and now a final decision awaits from the City of Guthrie on his future.

Mark BruningAn official complaint was filed against the Guthrie Police Department and Lt. Mark Bruning claiming the officer made an illegal arrest on his wife’s ex-husband following the Mumford and Sons concert on Sept. 7.

Kyle White, the man who is accusing Bruning of wrongfully arresting him, is asking the City of Guthrie for $125,000 in compensation for the arrest.

The dispute is said to have begun as the concert event was letting out and confusion on how to leave the event. White told a Oklahoma City news station that he later found out he was arrested for public intoxication.

But after spending eight hours in jail, White’s attorney says he received a letter from the city attorney informing him the citation against him was dismissed.

The City of Guthrie and Bruning continue not to comment on the issue since the incident was first reported.

A final ruling is expected to be made on Monday.

Bruning remains on administrative leave and continues to be employed with the city pending the final outcome.

The lieutenant has requested for privacy throughout the internal investigation.

Guthrie News Page reached out to Bruning on the recommendation on Friday, but stated his lawyer will make a statement at some point.

However, on the same day, Bruning spoke with KOCO and told them he is going to fight for his career and plans to file a grievance for the board’s recommendation.

“I was shocked to hear about this decision from the board,” Bruning was quoted of saying. “I’m going to fight for my career and the job I love.”

This is a complete abuse of power. I hope he is fired because of this. It was completely wrong and a violation of this man’s rights. I also hope he (the ex) wins the case and receives the money. I know who Bruning is and I have had nothing against him until I heard this story. He ought to be ashamed of himself. Immature and bad for the town in general!

He has done it before and lied about how it went down this was when he was a street cop then he was a bad cop then and I guess he is still.

He’s done stuff like this for years. The old chief before Damon was going to fire him for lying on police report well that didn’t happen but because of him they changed policies at station.

This is were You fire him And the chief also, most cops in Guthrie don’t fellow the laws that they are hired to in force. This is on of reasons I moved out of Guthrie.

I HOPE BRUNING NEVER GETS HIRED TO BE A COP EVER AGAIN ANYWHERE. RESENTMENTS AND REVENGE HAVE NO PLACE ON THE POLICE FORCE. MAYBE THE OTHER GUTHRIE COPS WILL THINK TWICE BEFORE THEY HARRASS OUR TAX PAYING CITIZENS. I HATE BAD COPS.

The news has only reported one persons side of the story, and it could very well be false, fabricated, or embellished. @formercitizen, you don’t even know the guy, or the official facts of the case, and you are handing down sentences. This is a sad day for Guthrie.

It sounds bad for Bruning, but Mary is right…we’ve only heard one side of the story.

All you need to know is a man was arrested for false reasons. And I do know him and his family…..I wasn’t impressed.

Well I just hope his wife really knows what she marred she should run from him.
If he did that to her ex.
And then if she knows what he did then wow.
He is way better off to run from her.

    Oh the ex.
I feel soo sorry for him.
That the way he did my family too.
If he fight this I will go back to guthrie to let them know why not to give him his job back.

Again, Former Resident, you sound like you are being biased because you know one of the parties involved, and only one side of the story. And it’s the only side you care to hear, whether it be the whole story or not. @Glad, I’m sure his wife knows him a lot better than you do; I’m going to infer that you don’t know him well at all, as you appear to have bias against him because of your family’s run-ins with the law.

Golly, sounds familiar. Pretty much the whole police department likes to pull this kind of stuff. Maybe not the whole police force, but a vast majority. This is not the first arrest for public intoxication because of an ex-wife which was untrue. Yeah!!!!!!!

Like people are stating, YOU ONLY KNOW ONE SIDE OF THE STORY. “Oh he did this to my family” “bad cop & chief should be fired as well….” You guys are biased. Making yourselves look bad. Grow up!!! “I moved out of Guthrie because of this” ya think anybody noticed you leave???? Ha, probably not!

I know both parties involved have been friends with both sides for a long time. Noone knows the whole story but the ones directly involved.
Mark Bruning is an outstanding Officer along with the rest of our police force. I’m sure sure there have been bad ones in the past but i can tell you Mark Is not one of them. You have no right to judge others on the things they have or have not done or are accused of.

I’m going to throw out my opinion now. No I don’t know either people in this situation, but it says i can share my comments and that’s what it is… A comment.. not a ruling, not a verdict… a comment. I must say something does sound funny about this story. The police officer never gave him any test to be positive that he was intoxicated.. now as far as i know the law states you are innocent until PROVEN guilty. I can understand how the man could be confused on how to exit the area.. I live around the flats and let me tell you it was a mad house around here! It was completely crazy with all these people and i can completely understand how he could of been confused. Next thing is that he just so happens to be the police officer’s wife’s ex… hmmm… so he was arrested with no testing for drunk driving and now there dismissing it… sounds strange to me.

    How cute
Some dislike the officer some dont
I grew up w ole mark But ill say my words to his face not on here for safety of internet

  16. October 21, 2013 at 1:19 pm

Public intoxication seems to be a strange charge to begin with considering the city lifted the “no public drinking” ordinance for the entire city that week.

Well it seems the board and his boss knew the whole story and now they have fired him. Not much to defend now is there?

Public servants get tried in the court of public opinion. Unfortunately for Bruning, if he was innocent, it wouldn’t matter because civil organizations do not like bad press. Sometimes they have to terminate to stop the bad press and appease the public. So @Former, I still think there is another side here. And I don’t think public intox was the issue. I think it was being drunk and disorderly in public. Yeah, they lifted the ban, but that still means you have to behave yourself. I think White did more than just get confused about the exit. But, it’s not really for us to know, is it? Public servants aren’t allowed to comment. Maybe one day Bruning will be able to tell his side.

Clearly “St” does not understand the process for firing a police officer in Guthrie. The person who makes the ultimate decision is the city manager. The city manager just so happens to be friends with White’s family, specifically White’s sister-in-law, Lauri White. Lauri also used to work closely with the city manager. The was no way Bruning ever had a chance at getting a fair ruling. But don’t worry “St,” in the arbitration an unbiased party, who has nothing to do with the corrupt city manager or White’s family, gets to make the ultimate decision. Next time maybe you should educate yourself before you start posting ignorant comments. I can guarantee that the majority of you who have negative comments about Bruning have either been arrested or had a family member arrested, and have an ax to grind with the police. Fly right and quit breaking the law… maybe then you won’t have some much hatred for law enforcement.

I’m sure, by the way you sound, IHKW (or is it Mary?), that it would make you feel so much better if the only people that were speaking negatively about him were actually criminals. But most of them, in reality, are not. People just don’t like dirty cops. The public isn’t as stupid as you’re hoping they will be. While the cops have a certain unspoken code to protect and hide things for each other, the people also have a way of learning the truth about ass hole, dirty cops through word of mouth. There is not one ounce of loyalty from most of the population once you hear stories showing who a cop really is. (a cheating ass hole, for example) You sound like you are either a friend or a relative. My guess is you need to remember that a liar is a liar and the people they hide the truth from the most are the people closest to them. Oh, and for the record I know of no one, including myself, that has been in trouble with the Guthrie police…not even a ticket from Mark.

Nope, not Mary. Good try though. You sound pretty mature “Let’s be Real.” Do you kiss your mother with that mouth? A “dirty cop?” That’s hilarious. How does arresting someone for being drunk in public make him a dirty cop? And I wasn’t referring to people getting arrested by the Guthrie Police, I meant arrested by any law enforcement agency. Who exactly are you calling a “cheating asshole?” You seem to have a very negative opinion of law enforcement for some reason.

I use dirty to describe criminals, also. It’s fitting. And my brother in law is a police officer, I respect him more than most people I know. So keep grasping.

What happened to the lawsuit Kyle White supposedly filed? There is nothing on oscn about a lawsuit?? Again, Kyle White making false statements to strong arm the city into making poor decisions. Sad
