Former Guthrie student involved in OKC shooting with police

Oklahoma City police were involved in a shooting on Wednesday afternoon after a female caller told police she was being held captive and trying to kill her. Turns out one of those suspects has ties to the Guthrie area.

Two OKC officers responded to the Plaza Inn, located at 3200 S. I-35 Service Road, and were shot as they reached the room.

They are both expected to be okay.

Reports indicate the 39-year-old former Guthrie resident Shane Leon Rhea ran out of the room holding a female hostage.

Rhea, who attended Guthrie High School in the early 1990’s, and the female entered northbound lanes of I-35 and police said Rhea attempted to highjack a vehicle. Additional officers confronted Rhea on the I-35 service road. Police said Rhea pointed a gun toward the woman’s head as he used her as a shield. Moments later he shot and killed the white female. A Oklahoma City officer then shot Rhea with a rifle.

“Several officers were trying to negotiate with this individual. He refused to surrender. He fired, killing the female. At the approximate time when he killed the female, an officer in an elevated position on I-35 fired with a service rifle, shooting the suspect,” Capt. Dexter Nelson said.

Rhea, who is listed in stable condition, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, kidnapping, shooting with intent to kill, assault and battery with a deadly weapon and pointing a firearm on Interstate 35.

He was released from prison in June and has a long criminal history with theft charges and a domestic violence charge.
