Chamber Chat: Horse Feathers Equine Rescue providing shelter

Bookmark and Share

Greetings! I hope this letter finds you well. This week I would like to highlight an organization in Guthrie that is doing great things in our community, Horse Feathers Equine Rescue. Cheri White Owl is Founder, President & CEO of Horse Feathers Equine Rescue. She is a former 4-H member and leader, American Mustang and Burro Association State Coordinator, and Wild Horse Mentor working with and teaching about Mustangs on gentling and training.

Ms. White Owl has additional experience in the medical field. In 2007, she was named as one of five finalists for the 2007 Oklahoma Spirit Award, a statewide award sponsored by Oklahoma City TV station CBS Channel 9, the Daily Oklahoman newspaper, and Remington Park, Oklahoma City’s racetrack. The main purpose of Horse Feathers Equine Rescue is to find a humane alternative for abandoned, abused, unwanted, neglected, or slaughter bound horses; to provide medical care, food, gentling, and training depending on individual circumstances increasing their potential for adoption.

Horse Feathers also provides shelter to horses in need of such care and to place these horses in caring homes where they can lead productive lives. When an animal is deemed unable to be adopted they offer sanctuary enabling it to live out its life in a humane fashion. Secondly they provide education to prospective horse owners, current horse owners, youth or any interested party seeking to educate themselves about horses. Horse Feathers also sponsors and promotes educational, charitable and cultural events for disadvantaged children.

Horse Feathers is currently the only horse rescue in the State of Oklahoma that is Verified through the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries and working towards Accreditation. http://www.sanctuaryfederation.org/gfas/  Horse Feathers assists the Community with their Hay Bank for those struggling to feed their animals to their Blanket Bank to help provide much needed warmth to those horses in long cold winter months. If you know someone who needs assistance have them contact Horse Feathers for more information. Now that is a whole lot of work, what a blessing to have this in our community.

There so so many needs that go along with an organization like this! You can actually sponsor a horse if you can’t own one; they call it being a Horse Feathers Angel. I was looking through their website and the list of needs are huge: from grain, alfalfa cubes, beet pulp, pine shavings, mineral blocks to lumber for repairing fences to wash cloths, baby laundry soap to wash the horse blankets to electricians to connect power for water troughs to equipment to help till and seed pastures.  Please take some time to look at their webpage; www.horsefeathersrescue.org . They are looking for Volunteers and also offer Community Service to schools, groups, troops and court ordered. If you don’t have access to a computer give them a call they would love to have you come for a visit 405-260-7281.

For an entertainment schedule to this weekend’s activities check out our calendar of events at www.guthrieok.com.  The Pollard Theater is in full swing as is our Farmer’s Market.   Every Saturday local songwriters share their music, Legend’s Lyricists, at Legends Food and Sports Grill at 2130 South Division at 7:30p.m.  on the patio!  Make Guthrie Weird Block will have another Block Party this Saturday on Second Street at 7:30pm. Have a great week!
