The Oklahoma Aging partnership (OAP) has released its 2014 report on legislation impacting the lives of older Oklahomans.  Sen. AJ Griffin is among the state lawmakers who supported measures OAP cited as a top priority during the 2014 legislation session.

OAP is a non-partisan coalition that identities and advocates legislation impacting health, safety, independence and quality of life for Oklahoma seniors.  Member organizations include AARP Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Alliance on Aging, the Oklahoma Silver Haired Legislature Alumni Association and the Oklahoma State Council on Aging.

One key provision approved during the 2014 session was a measure enabling hospital patients to designate a caregiver that would be notified and consulted on post-release care.  Supporters believe the measure will ensure a better recovery following the patients discharge, reducing the amount of costly readmissions.

“As our population continues to age, identifying and enacting public policy to ensure the safety and independence of older Oklahomans will become increasingly important,” said Griffin, R-Guthrie.  “These measures can make a significant difference in the quality of life for our seniors, and for our state as a whole.”

Past legislative priorities for the OAP have included bills creating Oklahoma’s Silver Alert system, legislation allowing nursing home residents and family members to install video cameras in their rooms, and authorizing additional training for law enforcement to better handle encounters with individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
