To have one student represent your hometown in the National High School Rodeo Association is an elite accomplishment. Two from the same small town is remarkable. How about two in the same family? That’s exactly what one Guthrie family has done.

Wyatt and Mike Bartels are in Rock Springs, Wyoming for the 66th annual National High School Finals Rodeo inside the Sweetwater Events Complex.

Wyatt, a 2014 Guthrie High School graduate, qualified in the bull riding event. His younger brother, Mike, who will be a sophomore at GHS, qualified for the .22 rifle shooting competition.

The brother duo are the first brothers from Guthrie to qualify for the event, that was first started in 1961.

The NHSFR is the world’s largest rodeo, featuring over 1,500 competitors from 42 states as well as Canada and Australia. At stake is over $200,000 in prizes as well as in excess of $350,000 in college scholarships available to the top finishers at the event.

In order to qualify for the final round of competition at the National High School Finals Rodeo, contestants must finish in the top 20 based on combined scores and times in the first two rounds. Final ranking to determine national champions will be based on combined scores across the three rounds.
