St. Mary’s stages 1889 Oklahoma Land Run re-enactment

It is a long-time Oklahoma tradition that many schools do each year. Students from St. Mary’s lined up for the 89er Land Run. Much like they did in 125 years ago.

St Mary's Land RunStudents formed groups and on the whistle sprinted toward their stakes that marked the unassigned land. On this day, there were no Sooners to be found.

One student from the group would take their land stake to complete their purchase. Meanwhile, other members of the group stayed near their land to protect it from others trespassing. Afterwards, it was time for lunch.

Students brought their blankets and had a camp out in their territory.

Seven land runs took place in Oklahoma, beginning with the Land Run of April 22, 1889, which opened the Unassigned Lands and led to today’s Canadian,ClevelandKingfisherLoganOklahoma, and Payne counties.
