A one-year-old child was airlifted following an accident Friday afternoon on Interstate 35 in Logan County and was admitted in serious condition after being ejected from the vehicle. Meanwhile, a woman and man were also sent to Oklahoma City hospitals.

Wreck 08302013Emergency crews were dispatched to I-35 northbound – just north of the weigh station – near mile marker 149 at 3:29 p.m.

The small child and driver Filiberto Alferez, 34,  were both ejected from their 2005 Chevrolet Suburban and suffered lacerations to the face. The child was found under the vehicle’s exhaust pipe and was reported to have burns on 25 percent of his back.

When crews first arrived, the child was unconscious, but later could be heard crying. He was admitted in serious condition at Children’s Hospital with head, arm, internal/external trunk, and back injuries.

Alferez was transported by Mediflight to OU Medical Center and admitted in stable condition with internal trunk
injuries.

The mother, Ana Martinez, 22, was also injured in the accident and was admitted in stable condition for observation at Southwest Medical Center. She was transported by Guthrie EMS to OU Medical Center.

All three victims were not wearing seat belts. Guthrie News Page has learned Martinez was in the back seat changing the baby’s diaper at the time when the rear passenger side tire blew out causing the Suburban to leave the highway and into a tree.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol shut the highway down for 67 minutes to allow the medical helicopters to land on the interstate.
