Top 10 record flood shuts down roads in Guthrie

Bookmark and Share

Despite not receiving a large amount of rainfall locally, rivers and creeks found their way out of their banks in Logan County over a two-day period causing roadways to flood and closing down streets for several hours.

Guthrie's west side was under water for 19 hours before the Cottonwood went back into its banks.

Guthrie’s west side was under water for 19 hours before the Cottonwood went back into its banks.

The Cottonwood Creek spilled onto roads from three locations: Broadway, Industrial and on Noble (Highway 33). The west side flood in Guthrie was larger than officials had first thought.

With a crest measurement of 27.40 feet, the flood was classified as a “major” flood. Flood stage for the location is set at 22 feet.

See video below.

The flood ranks 8th in historical crests for the location (see below). The highest crest measured at this location was 30 feet back on October 20, 1983.

City crews shut down Noble beginning from the viaduct bridge up to 12th street at 7: 10 p.m. on Saturday and reopened the busy part of road at 2:16 p.m. on Sunday.

Industrial Road was also closed down just after 6 p.m. and reopened on Sunday morning.

Some of the final cars make it past Division Street on Saturday night.

Broadway also reopened Sunday morning at 11:40 as it crested at 29.9 feet as it went 4.9 feet above the flood stage level.

Along with the rivers, Snake Creek proved to be too much for South Division and Mineral Wells Park.

The road was blocked off at 8:19 p.m. on Saturday and reopened at 7:28 the following morning.

Locally, Guthrie received 1.46 inches of rain over a three-day period, but heavier rains (7.23 inches in two days) in northwest Oklahoma City found its way to Edmond-Deer Creek’s Chisholm Creek and Bloody Rush Creek all which drain into the Cottonwood.

How do you find out or who do you call when roads into Guthrie are closed off due to flooding. I don’t want to be a nuisance but I also need to know to detour.   Thank you Ann Grace Carey
