Law enforcement: Motorists misunderstanding work zone signs

Bookmark and Share

Law enforcement is wanting motorists to know the laws when it comes to the speed limit in construction zones. The warning comes at a good time as majority of Highway 33 is under going a resurfacing project.

Drivers need to be aware of what this sign means.

Drivers need to be aware of what this sign means.

Motorists driving on Highway 33 have noticed construction crews working as they resurface the highway from 20th street in Guthrie all the way to the Highway 33/74 junction. At the same time, motorists are either ignoring the warning work zone signs, or simply misunderstanding what they mean.

A work zone sign that is often confused is the “Traffic Fines Double When Workers Are Present”. Motorists see the signs, but some assume if they don’t see any workers in the area then its okay to drive the “normal” speed limit.

However, that is not true and it could cost you a ticket.

Regardless, if construction crews are on or off duty, the posted work zone speed limits apply at all times. The sign simply means traffic fines can and will double when workers are present.

Majority of the work zone speed limit signs on Highway 33 is posted at 55 m.p.h. Law enforcement will continue to patrol the area and are urging citizens to obey all traffic laws.

Then it needs to say “while under construction” or something like that. Because seriously, the way it is stated is rightfully interpreted as while there are workers PRESENT, as in while there are people out there working. Instead of making us aware of what they mean by it because it seems people aren’t paying attention maybe they should reword their poorly worded signs.

Here’s a helpful tool more people on Oklahoma roads should use. Maybe they can read up on “Yield” signs, as well as the “Work Zone” signs.

Work zone speed limit XX is a clear message about driving. Adding traffic fine info. to the sign adds confusion. The job of signs is to clearly send a driving message, not educate the public on other related issues.
