Chamber Chat: Guthrie Job Corps hoping for your help

Guthrie Job Corps Center, is seriously concerned about the impact of the US Department of Labor / Employment and Training Administration (ETA)’s recent decision to freeze student enrollment at ALL Job Corps Centers, starting January 28 through June 30, 2013. This ill-conceived decision means that nationwide, 10,000 youth that have been waiting to get into the Job Corps program are being turned away and another 20,000 may ultimately be denied entry over the coming months.

The Guthrie Job Corps Center in Guthrie Oklahoma is a major part of the Guthrie Community. Over 1066 students are served per year. A cut to the Guthrie Job Corps Center would not only impact the center but the staff and be of major significance on the Guthrie Community. The Guthrie Job Corps Students actively work with local employers in Logan & Oklahoma Counties in the Work-Based Learning Programs. Several students are hired locally at different employers and become taxpaying citizens in the local community.

The above two paragraphs are the first part of a letter circulating to citizens like yourself. We need your help in supporting the Guthrie Job Corps center by emailing or mailing letters to our congressmen. If you would like to write your own letter we can give you sample letters or we have pre written letters that just need your signature. Guthrie is one of four Job Centers in Oklahoma. If you have friends or relatives in Tulsa, Tahlequah or Indiahoma please encourage them to write Congressman Inhofe, Lucas and Langford as well. Please contact us at 282-1947 or email me at mary@guthrieok.com for more information.
