The Oklahoma Department of Transportation swapped out the speed limits signs on the busy road Monday morning from 55 m.p.h. down to 45 m.p.h throughout a stretch of road that has seen its fair share of vehicle accidents.

The Guthrie City Council unanimously agreed to take the Street Committee’s proposal of lowering the speed limit on South Division (US 77) last February.

The 45 mph speed limit will now go beyond the dangerous intersection of Mission Hills housing addition and the Savannah House – Pleasant Hills apartment complex and will not increase to 55 m.p.h. until Prairie Grove Road as motorists travel south.

For northbound traffic, the lowered speed limit will be reduced from 55 mph to 45 mph beginning at Prairie Grove.

There have been ten-plus wrecks in the area stemming from a vehicle slowing or stopping to turn into one of the housing entrances.

Law enforcement will be patrolling the area and is asking that drivers adhere the 45 mph to avoid any citations from being issued.

Last April, the city council approved unanimously to lower the speed limit on Walnut Street to 25 mph from the previous 35 mph speed limit to be more consistent with other city streets.

HOW ABOUT REDUCING SPEED TO 35 MPH ON E. NOBLE (HWY 33) IN FRONT OF LOVE’S, BRAUMS, LONG JOHN SILVERS, ETC. I DRIVE THIS EVERYDAY AND I FILL LIKE 45 IS TOO FAST, A LOT OF ACCIDENTS IN THIS AREA LATELY.

What another speed trap? They already sit on Division and 33 to catch anyone coming in off the highways. If 45 is too fast along the way in front of Love’s and Braum’s, you need to learn to drive a little better.

Who’s bright idea was it to put both enterences across from each other at the TOP of a hill anyway. Next they will want a traffic lite.
