Applicants started the morning with a written general test of 50 questions. Each had to score a minimum of 70 percent to move on to the next stop at the Guthrie High School track.

At the track, the applicants needed to run a mile and a half in under 13 minutes to move on to the final stage at the fire station.

Once at the station, they were required to climb the fire engine’s ladder, 35 sit-ups in two minutes, 25 push-ups, unload tools from the engine, carry 115 pounds the length of the station and back, carry a 140-pound manikin the length of the station and back, weight transfer drill and carry a fire hose while walking across a narrow beam without falling off.

If an applicant was unable to complete any of the tasks they were excused for the remainder of the tests.

Charlie Stowe and Rodney Davidson, two of three current Battalion Chiefs, will retire on Jan. 31.
