Since tax season is upon us and annual ad valorem statements have been mailed to property owners, it seems important to mention again that property taxes do not fund roads. This is a widespread misconception and one we repeatedly try to clarify. The huge majority of property
tax funds public education. This is indicated on the tax statement you receive from the county treasurer’s office. On your tax statement, the portion of property tax which the county receives fall under the classification of “County General” and “County Health.” County General provides for the courthouse, supplies for the jail and salaries for elected officials. County Health funds the Health Department. “County Wide 4-Mil” is funding for schools, as are all remaining categories related to education. Read more…

We had a great weekend in Guthrie with the Historic Homes Tour, Candlelight Trolley Tours and the Victorian Walk! The nativity scene down at the Apothecary Garden counted over 1000.00 visitors! The Christmas Committee set up a screen and played an outdoor movie in the empty lot across from Harrison’s Chicken House!  The Ok Choral Sweet Adeline Chorus was amazing and so was the Governor’s own 145th Army Band. The Jr. High Band was really terrific, they moved all over the downtown area and really added to the whole Victorian experience. Dance With Me had a huge crowd surrounding them on First Street during their dance routine while peanut venders sold bags of roasted peanuts to wandering visitors. Read more…

Services were held Monday morning in Guthrie for celebrity makeup artist Roscoe “Ross” Burton. The Emmy-nominated cosmetics connoisseur may have been best known as Oprah Winfrey’s key makeup artist. Read more…
