Mayor not to run for fourth term; Ayers to run for office

For the first time in six years the City of Guthrie will have a new Mayor come next April.

Councilman Trey Ayers announced he will run for the office of Mayor.

Mayor Chuck Burtcher told Guthrie News Page he will not seek a fourth term in 2013 after serving the community for six consecutive years.

Current Ward I Councilman and Vice Mayor, Trey Ayers, announced he will run for the office.

The primary election is set for March 5, 2013 with the general election on April 2, 2013.

Candidates can file for candidacy between February 4-6 at the Logan County Election Board from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“I am truly humbled to be part of such an amazing community as well-being excited about the future for our City,” Ayers said in a statement.

“As we move forward on projects, I anticipate various challenges will present themselves along the way however; I will continue to work for the benefit of our citizens that we serve directly and in-directly.”

One of Mayor Burtcher’s first major volunteer efforts was the Cottonwood Flats Adopt-a-Block-Program which was designed for the purpose of helping to offset the cost of mowing/maintenance for the Cottonwood Flats, that is utilized by the entire community for the use of soccer leagues, summer festivals, concerts and other events major events such as the Oklahoma International Blue Grass Festival. Mowing the area each year costs the taxpayers over $19,000, according to the City.

The term for mayor is a two-year term and is elected at-large in a non-partisan race.

    I hope somebody else will also want to be our new mayor..wouldn’t want such an important position to be won unopposed.
