Oklahoma City, October 4, 2012— Local forecasts are calling for the first round of cold weather in Oklahoma. As temperatures start to dip, the American Red Cross urges families to be cautious when using space heaters and other heating sources, and to make a plan in case of a home fire. Heating sources are the leading cause of house and apartment fires during the cold weather. Read more…

Chamber Chat: busy weekend with numerous events in town

Hello! Guthrie has lots of exciting things going on this weekend! The Oklahoma International Bluegrass Festival begins Thursday and ends with a 9p.m. concert Saturday evening starring Vince Gill! For more information go to their website at www.oibf.com. Saturday is the beginning of the Guthrie Escape Art, Wine & Music Festival which ends on Sunday evening at 5p.m.  Guthrie Escape is a fine art event that will include many forms of art, live music, and tastings from local wineries. The festival will also feature a youth art exhibit and a hands-on interactive children’s exhibit.  There will be two stages set up for entertainers from noon to 6p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 4:30p.m. on Sunday! For a time schedule of entertainers such as Edgar Cruz you can access their website at www.guthrieescape.com. Great food will also be available on First Street during the festival! A free trolley will run back and forth from The Flats to 2nd Street and Oklahoma. Read more…

Since my last article, I’ve seen the best and worst education has to offer.  Let me start with the best, which is the Guthrie homecoming.  Words can’t describe the loyalty exhibited at the Friday morning alumni assembly.  This is yet another item our community should find as a source of pride.  Homecoming is much more than a football game; it is a renewal of community spirit from those that went before us.  I was particularly moved by the video tribute to the class of 1962 that incorporated a link from many events of the day including the promise of the “New Frontier” based on President John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address.  Read more…
