Memorial Day 2012

Bookmark and Share

The national holiday set aside to remember the women and men who died while serving in uniform was the focus of ceremonies sponsored by the American Legion LeBron Post 58 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4578 this past Monday, May 28.

The American Legion Post began the day with a short ceremony at Honor Park in the middle of Guthrie.  The ceremony included proper arrangement of the American Flag, presentation of flowers recognizing the fallen heroes, a special bagpipe honor, and the playing of taps.

The VFW and the American Legion both held memorial ceremonies at Summit View cemetery later that morning.  Logan County Young Marines posted the colors and then lowered to half-staff.  Wreaths were laid at a symbolic grave site by the American Legion, the VFW, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Guthrie Retired Teachers, Boy Scout troop 850 and the Young Marines.

The VFW rifle squad provided a 21 gun salute as men and women, boys and girls in attendance remembered the supreme sacrifices made by the heroes being honored and said “Thank You for your service”.
