eMedia set to launch May 31 at Guthrie library

In days it will be an exciting day for those who love to read their books on tablets as the Guthrie Public Library will begin their e-media launch.

The library is on track to launch free downloadable eBooks and audiobooks beginning Thursday, May 31. It was one of the first goals that Library Director Cyndi Selinger set when she came to the library in late December.

City Manager Matt Mueller announced the downloadable content will be provided free to card-holding customers through the Oklahoma Virtual Library Consortium, of which the library is now a member.

State-wide the consortium of 23 libraries shares a collective pool of digital resources that includes digital books, audiobooks, and music.

Users will be able to browse the library website, select items, and checkout using a library card number and password.

“Because the materials borrowed are digital, customers needn’t worry about due dates or late fees, just find what you want, download, and enjoy,” Mueller said.

The cost to join the consortium is a one-time fee of $500 with an annual recurring cost of $3000. The $500 includes extensive staff training and technical support needed to merge Guthrie Public Library with the consortium.

The annual recurring fee is split so that $1000 is paid to OverDrive for continued support and $2000 is designated for the purchase of new materials. This price is set for three years.

Along with emedia coming to the library so is faster internet.

The library is expecting a huge boost in internet speed in the next coming days. Current internet speeds run at about 1.5 mbps and will jump to 100 mbps meaning faster connections and wireless connections for those with mobile devices.
