Thunder tells GUES choir to hold off on national anthem

Bookmark and Share

10 students from Guthrie Upper Elementary School were set to sing the national anthem in front 18,000 plus fans inside the Chesapeake Energy Arena on Christmas Day, but that day will have to wait.

The GUES honor choir went through morning practices as they prepared to sing the national anthem for the OKC Thunder.

Last Friday, the Oklahoma City Thunder asked GUES music director Cathy Clark if her honor choir could sing the national anthem on the NBA’s opening day between the Thunder and Orlando Magic. Clark gladly accepted and began early morning practices with the honor choir.

However, the Thunder offices called Tuesday with the news that will have to wait. According to Clark, the NBA franchise found a soloist to perform, and in addition did not have enough allotted tickets for the group to attend.

Parents on social media expressed how disappointed the children were when learning of the news.

Clark contacted the parents of the five sixth graders, three fifth graders and two fourth graders to make sure they could alternate their plans and sing on Christmas Day before letting the children know of the opportunity. None of the parents decline the offer for their children to sing, but had to adjust their holiday travel schedules.

It is unknown when the honor choir will be asked to sing.
