Fireworks put on hold in city limits

The hot and dry weather conditions have played havoc on a new Guthrie city ordinance just passed earlier this month.

The Guthrie City Council passed the ordinance that allowed the sale and discharge of fireworks in city limits, but a recent burn ban has put an end to the sticks of dynamite. However, the sale of fireworks is allowed.

City Manager Matt Mueller is disappointed with the weather conditions, but is also optimistic.

“I am a little bit disappointed, I thought that this would be a really neat thing for our residents. Who knows though, we may get an unexpected downpour between now and then,” Mueller said.

On Monday, Guthrie Fire Chief Eric Harlow issued a burn ban in effect for the city limits of Guthrie effective immediately and will continue until further notice. The city ban includes any and all outdoor burning with the exception of gas grills only.

Mueller went on to say that most residents were holding off to purchase the permits simply because of the hot and dry weather. In total, three permits were sold before the burn ban was issued.

The firework permits are non-refundable in the event of a burn ban or red flag fire alert. Mueller said all permit holders were notified about this possibility before they purchased the permit.

“We are going to give the people who purchased the permits a voucher to get another one at no cost so they can use it on New Year’s eve, or the next Fourth of July,” Mueller explained.
